The historical aspect isn’t so much about religion as politics, and really you can get everything you need from the intro section of the Wikipedia page on Savonarola. I think having watched The Borgias did help me follow the story better, but I wouldn’t say having a lot of knowledge about that period is necessary for enjoying it. I think if you like Jo Walton’s other work you should definitely give it a go.
